The Pretender Animatic

What We Had To Do:

For this particular task we were required to watch 45 seconds of the Foo Fighters music video entitled "The Pretender" and in these 45 seconds we had to record ever time a different shot was used and record these results in the form of an animatic. As soon as this was done we were then required to download the music video itself by the means of file conversion and place it in the bottom right hand corner of the screen in a sony vegas project. Lastly we had to match up the separate shot images from our animatic to the shot changes in the actual music video which was playing in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

What We Learned By Doing This:

We learned multiple things from doing this project, one example of something we learned was the range of shot variety which is used in music videos. The 45 seconds of this music video contained over 30 shots and all of them being completely unique with the exception of a few repeats of certain shots within the music video for the odd few seconds.
We also learned that the duration of shots in a music video are very very short, hence causing the pace of editing to be extremely quick. This is the case for the song we chose because of its fast rock style genre, therefore a fast pace of editing with a violent tone suits this video perfectly. If we hope to do a song similar to this one then we will also have to learn how to organise that man shots and still have a good variety.

How Is Editing A Music Video Different To Editing Your Thriller?:

editing a music video would have drastic differences from editing our thriller, here are a few reasons why. Editing our thriller was a lot more slower paced in terms of the speed of editing, all our shots were approximately 4 seconds long, with the exception of the chase scene which even then was at least a second long whereas in the of fighters music video there was a majority of shots that didn't even last a second. As well as this we will also have to be very creative with the sits that we choose to use as they all need to be different in their own way so that a sense of variety is given off but at the same time the shots need to be in good positions so the music video still looks good. Lastly the actual recording process of this video will also be much more tedious, this is because we will need to re record the same line of lyrics more than once ever single time if we want to get more than one shot of this section of the song. This will prove difficult as we do not have more than one camera to use, so stoping and starting recording again is the only option.

Potential Tracks That We Could Use

I chose this song as a possibility as it has a lot of genre changes and it is more of a spin off than what i would usually listen to and for this reason it would be more of a challenge to make a music video to this. The song has a slightly techno feel to it but not so uch that it overpowers the song. The hard part about this song however is the prodominant female vocal line, as we do not know of anyone that can lip sync these lines for us.

This song is by the same band and for this reason has a lot of the same qualitys that the last song has, the only difference being the male bocals in this song. This will make our job easier as their are a few guys in the class willing to be in a music video that we are available to work with.

We liked this song as it is more of out style of music, meaning we would enjoy listening to the song whilst making the video. and the style the singer has is reasonably high pitch for a guy, meaning that if we use this song then facial expressions whilst lipsyncing are key for this particular song as it will not look realistic if the lip syncer looks to relaxed whilst singing it.

this, like the last one is from the same band, however this has the more of a hard rock genre style of musi that we were going for meaning that it is more suitable for us inparticular. For this reason we favour this particular option over our other options.

Looking for An Artist

  • In terms of finding a suitable song to use in our promo music video project. My band Before i Go plays gigs with a lot of local unsigned bands that deserve the right to be signed because of how talented they are. These unsigned bands are the bands i intend to look into whilst trying to find suitable music for my music video.
  • Because we have played gigs with these bands i am well aquainted with all of the members from these bands and for these reasons they would be more than happy with allowing me access to use the song if i give them credit for the song in the video.
  • These bands are unsigned so to use their one all i need to do is ask their permission, however if i cannot do this for whatever reason then i will have to resort to asking an already signed but still upcoming artist to use their songs. however i would like to avoid this options as it can only lead to complications with copyright laws if something goes wrong.
  • The track i must use has to be a maximum of 5mins long and no less than 3 mins, this is the normal range that sounds normally fall under so it shouldnt be too hard to find a song that fits this guideline.
  • In terms of the genre of the song they would swing more to the catagory of hard rock with the odd exception of pop rock and borderline techno. The genre will differ depending on the song that we decide to use.
  • The genre of the song can NOT be anything along the lines of rap, country music, and anything with obscene hard to understand vocals.

Styles Of Music Video

Styles of music video's

  1. Narrative Based - Storyline. E.g Gives you hell by The all american rejects. These narrative based music videos are made to portray the story that the song is about my clearly. therefore making the song more relatable and more interesting to watch as well as listen to.
  2. Cinematic - High production value, storyline, has a film-like quality. e.g So far away by Avenged sevenfold. Cinematic music videos are made primarily to look good, they have quite a high production value are are usually madee about a very serious topic like los of a friend etc. with the cinematic shots complimenting their sadness or whatever other emotion that may be being portrayed.
  3. Studio Based - One location, (studio) e.g Banshee by letlive. A studio based music video is basicly just a video of the band/artist themsleves performing their songs in a room on their own, this alows them to portray their emotions in the song through their movements and facvial expressions more than portraying the actual story of the song.
  4. Intertextuality - Refers to other existing texts/music videos. e.g Smooth criminal by Alien ant farm. This is a more serious version of a parody as it is not made to annoy or make fun of the original person who made the song but instead it is almost to compliment them and idolize them.
  5. Parody - Making fun of anyother text/video. e.g Girl all the bad guys want by Bowling for soup. This style of music video is made primarily to poke fun at the original makers of the songs.
  6. Pastiche - Working seriously with another genre/theme. e.g Candyman by Christina algulira. This brand of music video is normally used to film music videos as if they are in a different time period such as the example shows.
  7. As live - live performance video of a band playing the song. e.g Gravedigger by Architects. This is just as the title sugests, it is a video of the band playing their own song live, this is done so that the audience can be seen in the video and can therefore show their reactions to the song as well as the band members expressions also.
  8. Animation - A music video made primarily by computer animation e.g Walk over me by All american rejects. The animated music videos are normally used for humour purposes to make ths ong funnier as well as more interesting to watch, therefore maintaining the audiences attention the entire way through the song.
